Scripture: Mosiah 2:17 - And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.

Opening Song: Give Said the Little Stream (PCS #236)

Lesson:

Community is a word we use to describe where we live. It can be our neighborhood, our city, our county, or our State.  Community includes the people around us, the streets, parks and schools.  Every day we live in a community and it makes us happy when we make our communities better through service.

Think of the parks or playgrounds our family likes to visit the very most.

- What's your favorite part of visiting there?
- Do we have to pay money to play there?

Communities make parks, playgrounds and athletic fields available for free because they want the people who live there to be happy. We can show our gratefulness by serving our community in return.  It makes the place we live better for ourselves and our neighbors and friends.  When we serve it shows others that we follow Jesus Christ and want to make things around us more beautiful.

In the Boy Scouts organization they say “Leave this place better than you found it”. When you serve your community you make the world a better place for every one around you.

(show GAB 115/GAK 615: Service)
Not only do those we serve feel happy, but we also feel happy because we are doing what Jesus taught us to do.  Heavenly Father also feels happy when we serve each other.  Re-read Mosiah 2:17.  The Book of Mormon prophets teach us that when we serve others we are also serving Heavenly Father.

- Who feels happy when we serve the community?

(show service poster from Children's Friend magazine)

Our current Prophet, President Thomas S. Monson said “May we be … good neighbors in our communities, reaching out to those of other faiths as well as to those of our own.”  Even if you are small you are important enough to have an impact on someone or something else.  When you serve your community you feel good about yourself and you make Heavenly Father proud.

(If you printed it out, hang this poster where you family can see it.)

Bear your testimony about the joys of serving and building your community.  Share some of the blessings you have received and the feelings you get from community service.

(For tips on sharing your testimony please click here.)

Practice Song: If you are teaching your family the APRIL Song of the Month, go over the words and music with your family.

Activity:

Create Service Badges

1. Print onto heavy card stock.
2. Have children color their badge.
3. Cut out and attach to shirt with safety pin.
4. Wear while doing your community service project.

Serve Your Community

Arrange in advance for an act of service the children could complete this week.  Remind them that at Thanksgiving is a great time to remember our blessings and to share those blessings with others. Choose from the following activities as they best suit your family.  Try to choose an activity that blesses those outside of your own family.  You'll be surprised at how much kids like serving others.

- volunteer at a local food bank or shelter,
- take canned goods to a local charity/food bank/service organization which distributes food to the hungry.
- clean up the grounds around your church building.
- clean a stretch of highway or a public park.
- visit a local nursing home and speak with the residents or sing Primary songs.

...or think of another good deed your family can do!

Thanks for the download! My kids are very young (1 & 3) and I decided to instead do secret service where we each drew someone's name who we would do secret service for that week and we leave behind one of your badges as a sign once you have done your secret service. I'm excited to try it!
