2011 - Week 08: Today's Apostles

Scripture: Ephesians 2:19-20 - Now therefore ye are...of the household of God;  And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone...  (explain that the Household of God spoken of is today's church).

Opening Song: See Song in Lesson Plan

Lesson:

When Jesus Christ was alive on the earth, he established his church.  An important part of that church was calling 12 Apostles.  These Apostles were called to be special witnesses of Jesus Christ.  They went around to different cities and testified of Jesus Christ.

When Joseph Smith was called to restore Jesus Christ's church on the earth, he also called 12 Apostles, just like Jesus had.  Today our Prophet is Thomas S. Monson and he has 12 Apostles who help him run the affairs of the Church and testify of Jesus Christ.

Today's Apostles had real jobs before they were called, but when they were called to serve, they stop working their regular jobs to serve full-time as witnesses of Christ.  Just like in ancient times, the Apostles were sent throughout the world, the apostles today travel the world to strengthen and encourage Church members, to organize new Wards and to conduct the business of the Church.

These are the 12 Apostles who help lead the church today.

(show picture and point to each Apostle as you read their name...CLICK HERE to download)

Sing the following song to help children (and yourself!) remember our current 12 Apostles.  To the tune of "The Books of the Book of Mormon".

Packer - Perry - Nelson - O-oaks,
Ballard - Scott - Hales and Holland,
Bednar - Cook - Chirstofferson - Anderson...
These are the 12 Apostles.

We can learn from these special witnesses of Jesus Christ in many different ways.  we read their testimonies in church magazines, like the Friend, New Era and Ensign.  We hear them speak twice each year during General Conference.  We can also study their words by watching videos and reading talks by them on lds.org.

Their words are so important for us to listen to and obey, because they teach us how to become more like Jesus Christ and guide us as we prepare to return to live with our Father in heaven.

Bear your testimony about the current Apostles.  Share a favorite talk by a current Apostle and why it touched you.  You may mention the talk More Diligent and Concerned at Home by David A Bednar which is often referenced on this site and which inspires us in our efforts to have more regular Family Home Evenings.

(For tips on sharing your testimony please click here.)

Practice Song: If you are teaching your family the FEBRUARY Song of the Month, go over the words and music with your family.

I am really excited about this lesson! Our two year old talks about "President Monson" being our prophet, and I randomly hear the name "Uchtdorf" pop up in her conversations. It will be great to finally teach her about the apostles too! The flashcards look especially fun! Thanks again!

Just borrowed your downloadables to use for conference to hopefully entertain my two-year-old. Thanks! This is a great idea. I'm going to ask him to put stickers on the pictures when he sees that person in conference. We'll see how it goes.

Thank you thank you! I am using these for Conference this weekend. The small pictures will be cut out so my boys can glue them to their notes for each speaker. Then I will let them take turns putting the memory cards up on the felt board as each apostle speaks. They will love this! Thanks again!

I think these are great. Thanks so much for making them available. I think it was on the Apostle cards that Elder Andersen's name was spelled with a "son", a very common mistake. I know because my daughter is an Andersen & she always has had a problem with getting her boys names right on such things as a birth certificate, etc. Once again THANKS!
